That night, she awoke from a deep sleep, covered in sweat. A baby's cries rang in her ears, and she dreamed she walked toward the woods, but her feet were mired in quicksand. The baby grew ever louder, and she cried, wanting to reach him or her and help. She gasped awake at dawn, looking around the room. She heard no cries now, but tears spilled down her cheeks.

I will find out who you are. I'll help you.

Chapter Seven

Amity dressed with determination, donning a pair of cool, white crop pants and a pink T-shirt. The day blazed hot, and it wasn't yet nine. She cleaned up around the downstairs, all the while listening for the wheels of David's buggy.

She wanted to see him, and not just because she was attracted to him. She needed his help. He had listened to her first, and she knew he would believe her. She didn't know how she understood that about him, but she did.

He pulled up near ten, and she tried not to look toward the door for him. She heard his footsteps up the walk, and heat crept into her cheeks.

You've got it bad.

He knocked on the screen door, and she opened it.

“Your milk.” He handed it to her with a smile, looking right into her eyes this time, making her heart do tiny somersaults.

“Thank you.” She put it away in the refrigerator, feeling his eyes on her as she turned away.

“So, how are you. . . Amity?” His use of her first name sent a thrill through her.

“Fine.”

“That's good. I have something to ask you,” David murmured.

“Come in.”

She saw the serious glint in his green eyes. He took off his hat, sitting at her table. Amity enjoyed looking at him as she sat down, trying not to stare.

“Amity, I told you a little about myself, about my wife's death.” His voice grew thin, and he looked down. Then he did something unexpected. He put his hand on hers, squeezing it. Amity drew in a ragged breath, bolts of warmth running up her arms.

“Yes. I'm so sorry. I can't imagine. . .”

He held up his hand. “Yes, it's been hellish. Only God has helped me get through it. He allowed it, and I trust that some day I shall see Elizabeth again.” He swallowed hard, and Amity wanted to take him in her arms. His strength crackled between them like a living thing. “But I don't want to talk about her today. I want to talk about us.”

Amity sat still, not able to breathe or speak.

“Amity?” David smiled, a dimple appearing.

“Yes.”

“Is that okay?”

“Yes. I'm just surprised.”

“I can imagine you would be. I know we're different. I want to know if you’re spoken for, that is, if you're being courted by anyone.” The old-fashioned language made the conversation seem even more surreal.

“No, I'm not. There's no one.” Her hollow words made her throat hurt with all the tears she’d held inside for months.

“I'm glad to hear it. I'd like to court you.”

Amity laughed. She couldn't help it.
